The Khmer Rouge
The Khmer Rouge was a nickname for the Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK). The Khmer Rouge gained control of Cambodia in April 17, 1975. The organization's goal was to turn Cambodia into a classless rural country with no rich or poor people. The rules that the Cambodians followed under the Khmer Rouge's rule were very strict. People weren't allowed to have relationships with anybody or show strong emotions. Children were not allowed to go to school, and families were not allowed to go to church or follow a religion at all. Buildings ranging from schools to stores were torn down, shut down, or turned into buildings for the Khmer Rouge to use. This was a very violent time period in Cambodia, since the Khmer Rouge used violent forces to force everybody to do what they wanted them to do.
